I am a professional historian with expertise in the Holocaust and World War II, modern Germany and modern Europe, post-Holocaust genocides, and international justice. In my 40 year career, I have worked to obtain accountability for Nazi and international crimes, to prevent genocide and mass atrocities, and to promote and deepen understanding of the Holocaust.
Together with historian Joanna Sliwa, I have written The Counterfeit Countess: The Jewish Woman Who Rescued Thousands of Poles during the Holocaust. It tells for the first time the story of Dr. Josephine Janina Mehlberg, a brilliant Polish Jewish mathematician who saved thousands of lives in the midst of the Holocaust in German-occupied Poland by posing as a Polish Christian countess.
